Thanks for the suggestion. Let me buy an oscilloscope to check more on this one. Will have to do both (direct comparison with the new shield and use oscope to see what exactly happen with the failed shield)
I finally get another shield. I can confirm that this board works well! Using this new shield, I correctly identify the number of pole pairs, and successfully pass the closed-loop position control test.
The previously failed the shield has exactly the same pin configuration at the back, and used the same code and connections, but still fails.

I am glad you have identified the problem, but sorry to hear you received a bad shield!
Hope everything will work for you now that you have 2 good shields…
