When a IC has been coded to sense some variable, be it thermal, video or voltage, the system has become sentient. One might consider the sensing electronix to be extensions of the human mind / perception.
Sorry, but a sensor by itself is not sentient. Perhaps if it reacted unpredictably by the sensor using an output, sure, but perhaps the best example of sentient machine could be a neural network, which it tests sensors and outputs and programs itself (training) on what is the most effective use them… still, can it dream??
