New forum features - post voting and topic solution

Hi everyone,

In the latest forum update we have two new features to help navigate the vast universe of different topics and posts on this forum:

Both of these are somewhat typical forum features that will help us to highlight the most helpful posts from users and help new users find them easier.

Post voting is a bit redundant with the “likes”/“hearts” on discourse but its a bit more explicit.
Additionally from now on, the posts with a lot of likes will be highlighted so that they can be found easier.

In the topics that are describing issues or questions that require some solutions or answers, we now allow the topic poster to accept the reply post as a solution to its question/issue.
This will also, we hope, allow easier navigation and readability of different topics.

Hey @Gloppy16,

You’re right, this makes perfect sense. I suppose the issue is more related to our categories being too wast maybe. Like the hardware support encapsulates everything from problems with different boards, problems with connecting the cables and the design reviews. So maybe the best would be to have better categories so that we can have better suited default behaviors, like voting.

In any case, you can still decide if you want your topic to be voting topic or not at the creation.

Once the topic is created I don’t think you can change any more though.

There is also the option to sort the topic by activity or by the votes.

But yeah, we probably need a bit more restructuring of our topics and categories to make the forum more easy to navigate.

And we would love to have some help with this!
So if someone is interested, just let us know!

https://community.simplefoc.com/ links seems to be broken

A temporary workaround:

removing the 1 in the community1.simplefoc.com to community.simplefoc.com works with the links.

I think an auto redirect would be a more convenient fix.

Hey @dekutree64,

I do agree with you. This was just a try to see if it helps navigating out community universe. But it does seem to make it worse is some situations

As @Gloppy16 said, it would be nice to have it as an optional feature, or a default feature for certain categories. I’ll have to look into it a bit more to see what can we do to make it that way.

We can go back in any moment though.

Is it possible to disable auto sorting comments by votes when you make a post? For example, if a user posts a hardware design, it makes more sense to have the replies ordered based on the time they were posted, not the amount of votes a comment gets.

I know there is a little button you can press to switch it but I’m wondering if its possible or practical to let the poster decide which way the thread should be sorted.

Oh, thanks. That’s my fault. I’m on it!

EDIT: it should be fine now.

Can we go back to the old software? This is awful. It appears the intent of the new software is that each “reply” creates a new thread within the thread, and then “add a comment” adds replies to that sub-thread similarly to comments on youtube and such. That could potentially be helpful to keep things organized in threads where multiple conversations are happening simultaneously, but in that case the “reply” button should be placed under the original post, and then the sub-threads under that so it’s clear that pushing it will create a new sub-thread. Else people will constantly make mistakes and conversations will become scattered and lost.

And as it is, text in a “comment” is very small and hard to read and can’t have images or anything, so any time we want to respond with an image we’ll have to create a new sub-thread and a comment in the old sub-thread telling the person to go fish for it, again making navigation much more difficult than the old system.

I think the stack overflow format has its place here. Just maybe not as the default. Its very good for a Question Answer format where a simple question can be answered by one person.
